Hey guys, new guy here looking to purchase a Liberty. I ran across a Freedom edition with 50,000 miles on it with a 5 speed for $8,900. First of all, is this a good deal? Judging from all the months I've been searching for one, it sure seems like it.

Anyways, my major question here is how reliable is the 5 speed manual compared to the automatic? I like the idea of another 5 speed, but will look elsewhere if they aren't as reliable as the automatic.

Also, I did try searching, but all I ended up with was the CRD guys complaining that they all wanted a manual. LOST JEEPS • View topic (6)

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks! LOST JEEPS • View topic (7)

I don't know if either option is "more reliable", but I know the automatic's have a higher towing capacity. 5000 lbs for the auto, and 3500 lbs for the manual.

I rarely tow anything, so I looked for a manual when I bought my Jeep!

The only thing I would be "towing" is my dirtbike on a hitch carrier.

Let me rephrase then, which would require less maintenance? Like fluid change, etc?

Thanks!

It's a lot easier to replace a clutch than to rebuild an entire auto trans. . . . Considering the "special" nature of the Freedom Edition, I would jump on it - particularly if it is a 4x4. But tell the dealer, "I didn't really want a manual trans though. I'll give you $7000 for it."

well just as a minor thing when i got mine i didn't realize the automatics had a dipstick to check your tranny fluid, the manuals do not and changing the fluid on a manual tranny unless your pretty handy and have the right tools can be a pain in the rear.

"Special" nature? Care to elaborate on that? LOST JEEPS • View topic (34)

Also, this is an individual that is insisting he is very firm on his price. He is telling me it blue books for over $11,000... It is a 4X4 though, wouldn't buy one without. LOST JEEPS • View topic (35)

It does need 2 new tires though. Hope I can get him down on that.

No mechanical differences, but it should have different trim work, different rims, and some Freedom Edition lettering. There are a couple of Freedom owners on the board, such as mag03kj.

If it has the 17" Dakar rims, those are cool although your tire options would be limited.

Yes, it does have the 17 inch dakar rims. And I realized that means no more General Grabbers AT2. ..... LOST JEEPS • View topic (48)

I've owned my Liberty since the day it was new and I'm a pretty agressive driver. I'm up to almost 115,000 miles and I've had no issues with my clutch or any part of the Jeep for that matter. It's a solid vehicle.

Looks clean. If I was shopping, being a manual enthusiast myself, I would pull the trigger. I might would dicker a little because of the tires.

Will do. Those pictures don't do it justice. He sent me HUGE phots and those wheels and the rest of the vehicle are flawless. I do plan on dickering about the tires, but all in all I think it is a good deal regardless.

From a reliability standpoint
the key issue is that a driver can kill a manual - sometimes quickly.
normally an automatic will only die if you don't maintain it.

manuals commonly sell for less - because fewer people can drive them.

(and yeah - lots of CRD owners would have paid extra for a manual.....)

I get a kick out of "it's loaded" when referring to the KJ's. They pretty much all are loaded. But, that is a nice looking rig. I hope you get it!

You say that an auto tranny has a dip stick and yes they do(although 07+ libertys do not) and thats b/c the level of tranny fluid in an auto tranny is much more important than a manual. Not saying you can run a manual tranny low on fluid but you should(read, should, most do not) change the fluid more often on an auto tranny than a manual tranny. Far as I know a manual tranny just has a drain and fill hole, no filters or pans to drop like on a auto tranny. I for one would MUCH rather have a manual tranny over an auto tranny.

Yep. All you really need to do a fluid change on a manual is a wrench, a pump to pump new oil in (since the fill hole will be too close to the body to allow you to upend a bottle) and the correct gear oil. You should already have a wrench, and the pump is available rather cheaply at Harbor Freight. Much easier and cheaper than an auto trans service, and less often too.

Heck if you put a lift on the Jeep, you won't even need to jack it up to do your servicing.

FAQs

What is Jeep slang for? ›

Prior to 1940 the term "jeep" had been used as U.S. Army slang for new recruits or vehicles, but the World War II "jeep" that went into production in 1941 specifically tied the name to this light military 4×4, arguably making them the oldest four-wheel drive mass-production vehicles now known as SUVs.

What is the acronym Jeep stand for? ›

General Purpose vehicles

Contrary to what a lot of people believe, the word Jeep isn't technically an acronym. Each letter doesn't stand for something, but it's a reference to another acronym from back in the days of the war. Military personnel would refer to some vehicles as GPs - or General Purpose.

What did Jeep stand for in WWII? ›

The Jeep came to prominence during WWII, where soldiers commonly referred to “general purpose” vehicles as “jeeps.” Cartoon character Eugene the Jeep was also very popular with soldiers during the war.

What does Jeep mean in the military? ›

The word "jeep" already existed in military parlance. It dates back as far as WWI and described an unproven human recruit or an unproven new vehicle. There is evidence it was used this way in the build-up of forces prior to the war and the conception of the 1/4-ton jeep.

What does Jeep girl mean? ›

What is the meaning of “Jeep Girl” ? It can mean a lot of different things, depending on who you ask. Here is one of my favorites: The Jeep Girl is an imaginary creature that is fabled to exist in big built rigs and is not only exceptionally attractive, but also infinitely cooler than most other girls.

What is a Jeep person called? ›

Embedded in the vibrant Jeep community is the enduring concept of a “Jeeper.” This term, far more than a simple label, encapsulates a profound dedication to the iconic brand. Embodying a fervent love for exploration and fostering an unspoken brotherhood among enthusiasts.

What is a nickname for a Jeep? ›

Try giving your massive Wrangler a funny or coool nickname, like Junior or Baby. If you have a more modest model, like a Cherokee, names like Silver or Terra might be more fitting. Maybe you have a balck (the grim jeeper), white (stallion), or red (big red driving hood) Jeep and want name that fits the color as well.

Why are Jeeps called Willys? ›

This Jeep was called the Willys because the government selected a vehicle based on the fashion of the Bantam Car Company. Bantam lacked the production facilities to mass-produce, and the military wanted suppliers, so Willys got a contract to build this model of Jeep in the late 1940s.

Why is Jeep called Cherokee? ›

Named after the Cherokee tribe of Native Americans in the United States, Jeep has used the nameplate in some capacity since late 1973 when American Motors Corporation (AMC) introduced the 1974 model year line.

What did the Germans call the Jeep? ›

The Kübelwagen's role as a light multi-purpose military vehicle made it the German equivalent to the Allied Willys MB "jeep" and the GAZ-67, after previous efforts to mass-produce standardized military four-wheel drives for the Wehrmacht had largely failed.

Who owns Jeep now? ›

FCA, or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, is the parent company that oversees the full Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, RAM, FIAT, and Jeep brands. While FIAT and Alfa Romeo are fairly recent acquirements, the full FCA lineup often has similar features and proprietary technologies, such as the Uconnect® suite.

What does YJ stand for in Jeep? ›

General Purpose was slurred into JEEP, supposedly. There was the DJ - Dispatcher's Jeep. The CJ meant "Civilian Jeep". I don't think YJ was just a designation and never meant anything, but I see how people call it "Yuppy Jeep" like they say TJ means "totally joking".

If you've ever been the proud owner of a Jeep, particularly the Wrangler or CJ, you're likely familiar with the “Jeep Wave.” This symbol of comradery ranges from a simple elevation of a finger or two above the dashboard to a full-fledged, five-finger wave outside the driver's window.
