  • Reds' Elly De La Cruz: Collects two hits, RBI in loss

    Rotowire

De La Cruz went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Sunday's 4-3 loss to Pittsburgh.

De La Cruz's seventh-inning single plated the team's first run and was the Reds' only hit with runners in scoring position. It was his third multi-hit game in the last five contests. In typical De La Cruz fashion, he's filled up the box score during that stretch, going 9-for-21 with a home run, six RBI, two steals and seven runs scored.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: RBI, steal in loss

    Rotowire

Friedl went 0-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Pirates.

Friedl stole a base in the first inning, snapping a streak of 33 games without a theft. It was just the seventh steal of the season for the outfieler, who swiped 27 in 2023. The reduction in steals is partially due to missing many games to injury, but it mostly is the result of no longer batting leadoff. Since returning from one of his injuries in late July, Friedl has primarily batted fourth and attempted just two steals in the 29 games since.

  • Grandal hits a 2-run homer in the ninth inning as the Pirates rally past the Reds 4-3

    Stats

  • Reds' Alexis Diaz: Yields walk-off homer

    Rotowire

Diaz blew the save Sunday against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs on one hit and a hit-by-pitch over one-third of an inning.

The Reds took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth, but Diaz couldn't get the job done. After getting Rowdy Tellez to ground out to start the frame, Diaz hit Bryan De La Cruz with a pitch then surrendered a walk-off two-run home run to Yasmani Grandal. The 27-year-old closer is now 24-for-27 in save opportunities this season and the outing pushed his ERA from 4.00 to 4.37.

  • Reds' Nick Martinez: Decent in abbreviated start

    Rotowire

Martinez didn't factor into the decision Sunday against Pittsburgh allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and no walks with a strikeout over three innings.

Martinez didn't come out for the fourth inning as he handed the ball off to Carson Spiers - who threw four innings of relief - after just 54 pitches. Sunday's outing was Martinez's fifth straight start, and it's unclear why his appearance was cut short. During that five-start stretch, Martinez posted a 3.55 ERA with a 20:3 K:BB. If he pitches on regular rest, Martinez would likely match up against the Brewers next weekend. However, after tossing merely three innings, he could be available to pitch earlier if he's needed.

  • Reds' Santiago Espinal: Maintaining regular lineup spot

    Rotowire

Espinal will start in right field and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Espinal will pick up an eighth consecutive start after he recorded at least one hit in each of his previous seven contests while going 11-for-27 with three runs and three RBI. He's seen action at third base, second base, designated hitter and now right field over the last eight games, and the Reds should continue to carve out a regular spot in the lineup for Espinal while he's wielding a hot bat.

  • Reds' Ty France: Taking seat Sunday

    Rotowire

France is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Pirates.

Though the Reds have two everyday spots available in the lineup with Jake Fraley (knee) and Jeimer Candelario (toe) landing on the injured list, France has still found himself squeezed out of the starting nine on occasion. He'll be on the bench for the second time in three matchups against right-handed pitching, as the Reds are making room in the lineup for new acquisitions Dominic Smith and Amed Rosario at the expense of France. Since being acquired by Cincinnati in late July, France is slashing .239/.284/.433 with three home runs, seven RBI and seven runs through 21 games.

  • Reds' Casey Kelly: Finishes off Saturday's win

    Rotowire

Kelly was credited with a save in Saturday's 10-2 win over the Pirates after striking out two batters over three perfect innings of relief.

Called up from Triple-A Louisville earlier Saturday, Kelly was summoned from the bullpen after starter Julian Aguiar covered six innings before departing with an eight-run lead. In what was his first MLB appearance since 2018, Kelly made quick work of the Pirates, needing 38 pitches to record his nine outs. Though he was deployed out of the bullpen Saturday, Kelly had been stretched out as a starter at Louisville, and he could be in line to get a look in the Cincinnati rotation with Hunter Greene (elbow) and Andrew Abbott (shoulder) both recently landing on the injured list. The Reds currently have four healthy starters, but with a stretch of six games in five days coming up this week, the team will require two additional starters.

  • Reds' TJ Friedl: Gets team started early

    Rotowire

Friedl went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored in Saturday's 10-2 win over the Pirates.

Friedl's first-inning single plated the first of four runs the Reds scored in the inning to take an early lead. It's been a stop-and-start season for Friedl, who appears to have put three separate IL stints behind him. He's currently in his longest stretch of good health and is slashing .239/.314/.457 with six home runs, 19 RBI, nine walks and 11 runs scored over his last 28 games.

  • Reds' Hunter Greene: Good injury news confirmed

    Rotowire

Reds manager David Bell said Saturday that Greene is confirmed to be dealing with inflammation in his right elbow after an MRI revealed no UCL damage, MLB.com reports.

The Reds received good news on the injury a week ago, but the team and Greene sought more opinions. Three separate doctors have confirmed the diagnosis of inflammation. The right-hander will need at least two weeks for the swelling to subside before he begins a throwing program, so he likely won't be a candidate to return from the 15-day injured list until mid-September in a best-case scenario.

  • Elly De La Cruz drives in 2 runs as Reds crush Pirates 10-2

    Stats

  • Reds' Julian Aguiar: Gets first career win

    Rotowire

Aguiar (1-0) earned the win against the Pirates on Saturday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings.

Aguiar's lone mistake Saturday was the home-run ball served up to Rowdy Tellez, but he was otherwise lights out in his second career start. Aguiar kept the Pirates off balance all night and possibly earned himself another turn in the rotation. It helps that the rookie has allowed just three walks and seven hits in his first 10 innings of work.

  • Reds' Elly De La Cruz: Drives in two, swipes bag

    Rotowire

De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, three runs and a stolen base in Saturday's 10-2 win over the Pirates.

De La Cruz filled the stat sheet once again with a pair of RBI, three runs and his 61st stolen base of the season. De La Cruz's RBI double in the sixth was his 59th extra-base hit this season, one away from making him just the 10th player since 1901 with a season of 60 extra-base hits and 60 stolen bases. The 22-year-old is in the midst of another strong week with a home run, five RBI, seven runs and two stolen bases in six games.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Picks up 22nd steal

    Rotowire

Steer went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a stolen base in Saturday's 10-2 win against the Pirates.

Steer extended his hitting streak to seven games with an RBI double in the first inning. Steer is one of seven players in the National League with 30 doubles, and he along with Francisco Lindor are the only two among that group to also have 20 or more stolen bases. Steer has 16 RBI over his last 17 games and has now reached 80 or more for the second straight year. The 26-year-old has a .235/.326/.434 slash line through 127 games this season.

  • Reds' Alan Busenitz: DFA'd by Cincinnati

    Rotowire

The Reds designated Busenitz for assignment Saturday.

Busenitz is on his way out just one day after having his contract selected by the Reds. In his one inning of relief against the Pirates on Friday, he gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits. Across his 41 outings in Triple-A this season, Busenitz has a 3.79 ERA and 1.25 WHIP across 57 innings. Casey Kelly had his contract selected by Cincinnati from Triple-A Louisville in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Casey Kelly: Contract selected by Cincinnati

    Rotowire

The Reds selected Kelly's contract from Triple-A Louisville on Saturday.

After spending the last six seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization with the LG Twins, Kelly signed a minor-league contract with Cincinnati on Aug. 8. Across his two starts with Louisville, he gave up four runs on eight hits and five walks while striking out two over eight innings. When Kelly takes the mound for the Reds, it'll mark the first time Kelly has pitched in MLB since 2018. Right-hander Alan Busenitz was designated for assignment by Cincinnati in a corresponding move.

  • Reds' Noelvi Marte: Absent from lineup

    Rotowire

Marte is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against Pittsburgh.

For the month of August, Marte is slashing .230/.242/.377 with seven runs scored, two home runs, five RBI and a 32.3 percent strikeout rate over 62 plate appearances. Santiago Espinal is starting at third base and batting eighth.

  • Reds' Amed Rosario: Not starting Saturday

    Rotowire

Rosario is absent from Saturday's lineup against Pittsburgh.

Rosario started the Reds' last two games, going 2-for-6 with one run scored. Will Benson will start in right field and bat ninth against Pirates right-hander Jake Woodford.

  • Reds' Julian Aguiar: Awarded another start

    Rotowire

Aguiar is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Pirates at PNC Park, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

The rookie right-hander will make his second turn through the rotation after covering four innings in his MLB debut in Toronto this past Monday, when he took a no-decision after striking out two batters while giving up two earned runs on four hits and one walk. With Hunter Greene (elbow) and Andrew Abbott (shoulder) recently joining Graham Ashcraft (elbow) and Brandon Williamson (shoulder) on the injured list, Aguiar should have the opportunity to make additional starts beyond Saturday.
